“Give me some mud off a city crossing, some ochre out of a gravel-pit, a little whitening, and some coal dust, and I will paint you a luminous picture...” John Ruskin
As part of this year’s Walkley Festival we are launching the ‘Luminous Picture’ Photo Competition. We have chosen a photography competition because with a camera phone, anyone can take a striking photo, young and older people, people born in Walkley and those born far away.
For this competition we want to see photos of people, places or things in Walkley on the theme of light, bright or very colourful. We are hoping you will find inspiration at the community centre and festival events but whatever you find that strikes you as ‘luminous’ we want to see it! Entry is free and there are three classes: children (under 12s) young people (13 to 19) and adults. The competition is now open and the closing date is midnight on Friday 7th July 2017.
To enter, post on Facebook or Twitter using #walkley12 (children under 12), #walkley13 (young people aged 13 to 19) or #walkley19 (adults) - don't forget to make the photo public. Or you can email it to firstname.lastname@example.org (with your name & age). The closing date is midnight on Friday 7th July 2017 with the winner announced on our website on 14th July.
The judges will be centre trustees Carrie Leyland and Natalie Allistone who both bring both a knowledge of and a passion for Walkley, with its rich Ruskinian heritage with the community centre at its heart. The judge’s prize is tea and cakes at Gerry’s Bakery, kindly donated by our wonderful local artisanal bakery and there will be runner-up commendations. We’ll be sharing photos on social media throughout the festival period and so please get in touch and let us know your favourites.
